Emmerich Kálmán: THE DUCHESS OF CHICAGO

The creator of the greatest operetta classics, The Čárdáš Princess and Countess Marica, reached for a musically and dramaturgically unconventional work at the peak of his success. Charleston and slowfox compete here with the Viennese waltz and the Hungarian čárdáš, just as characters from Old Europe compete with characters from the New World.

Although Kálmán had not been to America before, his composition is masterful and reflects the joie de vivre and contradictions of the then social and political situation in the interwar period. Many of these themes are again relevant and alive today. The ŠDKE opera will interpretively build on the Košice opera company's rich experience with operetta and specifically with Kálmán's music.

The production represents another collaboration between all ŠDKE ensembles – opera, drama and ballet.
