Copenhagen, 1918. The euphoria of the end of World War I is quickly fading, and the world continues to be plagued by inequality and misery. Karoline, a young and poor textile worker, is left alone. Her husband Peter is lost at the front and a brief romance with the factory director ends in disappointment. When she finds herself jobless, abandoned and pregnant, she meets the charismatic Dagmar, who is the only one who shows kindness and understanding. She runs an illegal adoption agency and helps mothers find foster homes for unwanted children. Since Karoline has no one to turn to after giving birth and has no money, she seeks out Dagmar and takes on the role of wet nurse. A strong bond develops between the women, but the revelation of the shocking truth about Dagmar's work is not without consequences.

The film, a historical drama about the boundaries of good and evil, had its world premiere in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and has already won a number of awards, including Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.
