Old World Herbs: The Science and Art of Renaissance Botany in the Pages of Herbariums

23.01 - 31.05.2024
Info from the organizer

The department of historical funds and bibliography prepared a specialist exhibition from the historical fund of ŠVKK called Herbae veteris mundi - Herbs of the Old World: Science and Art of Renaissance Botany on the pages of herbariums. The opening of the panel exhibition will take place on 18.1.2024 at 16:00 in the Culture and Education Center at Pribinová 1.

The exhibition was prepared on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of the monk Cyprian from the Red Monastery and offers an opportunity to look into the wonderful world of plants through another rare work of historical botany – the herbarium of the Renaissance scholar and physician Mattioli, which at one time became the most sought-after botanical, medical and pharmacy manual. The German and Italian editions of Mattioli's Herbarium from the 16th century, which are in the collection of the State Science Library, will also impress with their rare hand-coloring. Part of the opening will be a professional lecture by the director of the UPJŠ Botanical Garden in Košice, prof. RNDr. Pavle Mártonfiho, PhD. entitled About herbariums in the past and in the present. The lecture will focus on the historical development of herbariums and on the concrete example of the until recently forgotten herbariums of the Andrássy family from Betliar. Today's herbariums will be documented using the example of the herbarium of the UPJŠ Botanical Garden in Košice.

In the KVC premises, the exhibition will be open to the public until May 31, 2024, on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is necessary to register at least one hour before the visit by phone. number: +421918245896 or by email to
