Seth Brundle is an overly ambitious top scientist who is developing a system to transport objects through space in a matter of seconds. Journalist Veronica Quaife, who fell in love with him while writing a report on his scientific endeavors, encourages him to finish the project, and Seth decides to test the invention on himself. However, during a bizarre teleportation experiment, his genes accidentally mix with those of a fly, and Veronica suddenly realizes that the object of her interest is a terrifying creature that is slowly transforming into a flying insect. At first, Seth is proud of his new physical abilities—which nature has unexpectedly bestowed upon him—but the moment his insect half begins to dangerously overshadow his human identity, the excitement suddenly turns into a horrific nightmare.
