Ondrej Šoth, Michael Kocáb: MILADA HORÁKOVÁ
Milada Horáková was unjustly convicted and executed in the largest of the fabricated political trials that took place in 1950s communist Czechoslovakia. The aim of the so-called monster trials was to discourage people from any criticism of the state regime. The grand trial, also known as the 'trial of the mastermind of the conspiracy against the republic with Dr. Milada Horáková's group', included dozens of smaller trials across the country. Pleas for clemency were made in vain. Despite the urging of world figures such as Einstein, Churchill, Cardinal Griffin, Russell and many others, then Communist President Clement Gottwald confirmed Milada Horáková's death sentence with his signature on 24 June. In all, they decided on 10 death sentences, nearly 50 life sentences and other prison sentences totalling more than 7,800 years of imprisonment. Horáková became a symbol of resistance to totalitarian power thanks to her indomitability and courage.
With deep respect, the creators dedicate the production to Jane Kánská, the daughter of Milada Horáková, to whom a letter written on death row for her then sixteen-year-old daughter only reached her after an incredible forty years.
