Holiday ride among books starts with a family picnic

Summer with the Košice Youth Library will have the smell of grass and the colour of stories this year.
The Košice City Youth Library invites families to an all-day Picnic in the Park on 1 July 2026, which will transform Kulturpark into a lively, creative and playful space for all generations. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., families will enjoy a day full of imagination, good cheer and shared experiences.

'We enter the summer with joy and great anticipation. I believe the picnic will be a wonderful start to the holiday season and a place to come together, talk, play and open the door to a world of stories together. I look forward to each and every gathering and to all who come to experience a day with the library in the park,' says Library Director Kamila Prextova.

Visitors can look forward to creative art workshops, playful reading, fun knowledge and movement games as well as the popular large-scale Man, Don't Be Angry. The atmosphere will be complemented by a great summer book exchange, from which visitors will be able to take home new stories or, conversely, donate to those in need. The event also includes a charity toy collection for the Toy Library. It is a project that helps children grow, learn and discover the world through toys that support children's development such as logic games, jigsaws, building blocks, motor toys or other quality and well-preserved games that develop creativity, thinking and skills.

'When families bring in a game or toy, they are helping those children who need it. And that's a gesture we appreciate immensely. As a thank you, we have decided to give each donor a free year's subscription to the library, a small gift for a great act of solidarity. I hope that thanks to this, even more people with a good heart will join us,' adds the director.

Summer full of stories continues at the library branches

The picnic is just the first stop on the holiday trail. The library has prepared nine weeks packed with programmes that will turn summer into an adventurous journey among books for children. Children can look forward to the activities of the Summer Read project at the five out-of-school branches and regular Thursday readings at the Kulturpark .

'The summer holidays can thus be a time for families when imagination becomes their guide and the library in turn a place where a new story is read or written every day. We will make sure that children do not forget to read,' concludes Kamila Prextová.
