From the ancient history of Košice - Part 5: Pearls from the history of the city

Did you know that several real treasures have been found in Košice in modern times? Discover a modern treasure, accidentally discovered during excavation works on Main Street in 1935. Today, you can get a closer look at Košice's gold treasure at the museum's permanent exhibition Journey to the Treasure - its magnificent collection consists of 2,920 gold coins, three gold medals and a Renaissance chain.

Travel back in time to the Middle Ages full of knights, battles and power! Košice Castle will present you with its well-preserved ruins, round tower and triangular bastion - it was here that the Battle of Rozhanovce took place! Visit the village with space for craft classes, medieval clothing exhibitions and period events. And be sure to plan your visit during the festival of the cuisine of the time, Hradná vareška!

Penetrate the Austro-Hungarian history also in the Košice complex Rodošto which refers to the prominent figure and life of the leader of the anti-Habsburg uprisings, Francis II. Rákoczi. In Rodošto you will find a replica of his exile house, which stood in the Turkish town of Tekirdağ.

Head to the Košice recreational area, which hides many references to the rich mining history of the town - your natural expedition for history and sporting experiences awaits you in the Bankov area with its mythical history of past centuries, whose remains can be found in the mining villas, or for example at the Chapel of Jan Nepomucký with a spring.

According to legend, Jan Nepomucký refused to reveal the secret of the king's wife, for which he was thrown off the Charles Bridge in Prague in 1393. His deed and personality is still a symbol of integrity and a patron of confessors and rafters. Honour the memory of Jan Nepomucký at the local chapel and spring.
