Even if you came for the sports, it’s worth staying for the experiences. Balance out your dynamic program with a dose of cultural calm and get to know this once royal city from a different perspective through our hand-picked tips.

Historic highlights on engaging city tours

It might seem like a must-do, but Košice’s history is far from boring. Spend a few hours exploring stories that are both mysterious and funny, and discover hidden corners full of charm. Start on Hlavná Street, the core of Slovakia’s Largest Urban Monument Reserve. A walk from north to south is filled with legends, iconic buildings, statues, fountains, and parks that bring the centuries-old story of the city to life.

Beyond the popular stroll and café terraces, we highly recommend visiting the majestic St. Elisabeth Cathedral, home to several architectural rarities. You also shouldn’t miss the climb up Sigismund Tower for a great view of the city center, the Church of St. Michael, or the underground ossuaries beneath the former funeral chapel. And while you're in the area, grab a gelato or cold drink and enjoy the city's Singing Fountain—a visual and musical experience in one.

Wander the city on your own or ask about guided tours at the Visit Košice InfoPoint at Hlavná 59.

Stadium tunnels and the Košice Football Hall of Fame

You’ll find a piece of Košice’s history even beyond the Gothic architecture—especially if you’re into sports. Take a guided tour of the Košice Football Arena, where you’ll not only explore behind the scenes of a modern stadium but also visit the Košice Football Hall of Fame. This small exhibit brings back memories of unforgettable matches, legendary goals, and iconic names connected to Eastern Slovakia’s football history.

On the tour, you’ll see areas usually closed to the public—locker rooms, the pitch, media zones, private lounges, and views from the skybox. And if you get hungry before or after your visit, stop by the stadium’s bistro for a quick bite.

Need a coffee break?

Košice is full of cozy cafés and courtyard nooks where you can slow down, reflect on the match, or plan your next stop. Whether you're after a quick espresso or a laid-back breakfast, you’ll find the perfect spot to unwind. Take a seat on the terrace of the popular San Domenico Café at Dominican Square and soak in its coastal vibe. On weekend mornings, enjoy your coffee or brunch with views of the bustling local market and the Dominican Church, the oldest in the city.

Outdoor cinema nights

Step into the charming courtyard between Hlavná and Mäsiarska Streets, where you’ll find Záhradné Kino – an intimate summer cinema project curated by the team behind the popular Kino Úsmev (Úsmev the Cinema). This open-air venue blends contemporary culture with the city’s cinematic heritage, offering a truly unique experience under the sky. Grab a craft drink and a small bite on site, wrap yourself in a blanket, and enjoy the latest film releases or beloved classics in a space full of character and charm.

Fans of summer cinema will also love Košice’s Amfitheater, which comes to life every year with open-air screenings of popular films in the one-of-a-kind atmosphere of this outdoor venue.

Cool off in the heart of the city

After an intense sports experience, it’s time to cool down—and you can do it just minutes from the historic center. Rumanova Swimming Pool, located in the picturesque City Park, offers three upgraded pools, water slides, and space for both swimming and relaxation beneath the trees. No picnic needed—on-site stands serve all your summer favorites.

Right next door is the five-star Villa Sandy Resort, located in a beautifully restored former skating pavilion. It’s a must-visit for fans of fine dining, fragrant coffee, and slow-paced leisure. Near the resort’s tennis courts, you’ll also find the Playko multi-sports complex. But if you’re just in the mood to relax, the park also hosts local cultural events throughout the summer.

Escapes beyond the green horizon

In Košice, nature is closer than you think—even without a car or bus ticket. Hike up to Hradová Lookout Tower for stunning views of the city. For a slower-paced walk with friends, head to Hrešná and Alpinka, known for forest trails and calm surroundings. A favorite local getaway is Anička Park, with sports areas, food stalls, and plenty of space for a laid-back afternoon. End your walk with a taste of local snacks or a cold beer—you’ve earned it.

And if you have an extra day, it’s definitely worth venturing outside the city—but still within easy reach. Thanks to its location, Košice is a fantastic launchpad for full-day adventures. The Tokaj wine region offers scenic cycling trails, remarkable architecture (like the lookout tower), small local wineries, and historic wine cellars where you can taste wines once poured for royalty. Visit Grand Bari Winery for top-quality wine, stunning photo-friendly design, and sweeping views over what seem like endless vineyards.

Tokaj is accessible by car or public transport and welcomes both seasoned wine lovers and anyone curious to explore Slovak vineyards from a fresh perspective.

Košice cheers for sport—but it also cheers for culture, discovery, and rest. After a thrilling match, treat yourself to the second half—filled with art, film, wine, history, and nature. Find more inspiration in the
