A 100-member Gypsy orchestra from Budapest | concert
When dozens of violins, cellos, double basses, and the unmistakable cimbalom come together on one stage, the result is a sound that cannot be overlooked or ignored. On January 23, 2027, at 7:00 p.m., the 100-member Budapest Gypsy Orchestra will bring an evening full of spirit, virtuosity, and musical passion to the Historic Town Hall in Košice.
The 100-member Budapest Gypsy Orchestra (100 Tagú Cigányzenekar) was founded in Budapest in 1985 and has since won over audiences around the world. It has become a prominent symbol of Hungarian and Romani musical tradition, and its concerts are characterized by a blend of virtuosity, temperament, and spontaneous energy.
The orchestra’s monumental lineup creates a striking sound that can shift in an instant from gentle melancholy to thrilling virtuosity. An integral part of his performances is the cimbalom, which, together with dozens of string instruments, shapes the ensemble’s distinctive sound.
From Csárdás to Classical
The concert program will feature Hungarian czardas, traditional Romani melodies, and world classics. Works by composers such as Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauss, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Béla Bartók will be performed—in the orchestra’s unique style, where classical musical tradition meets temperament and spontaneity.
The orchestra’s exceptional nature is further confirmed by its entry in the Guinness Book of World Records and its prestigious “Hungarikum” status, which it received in 2014 as an exceptional example of Hungarian cultural heritage.
