Summer is beginning on the French Riviera, and it’s one that five-year-old Géo will certainly never forget. Together with a group of kids, he discovers a world of red cliffs, the sea, and dangerous cliff jumps. But when a rival group appears on the scene, the innocent childhood adventure turns into a battle for territory. And something even stronger begins to emerge between the rivals—the first sparks of friendship, attraction, and love. It is a sun-drenched, childlike variation on Romeo and Juliet. Two rival groups, a boy and a girl from opposing sides, and a world in which children’s games gradually begin to resemble adult conflicts. Bruno Dumont, however, transforms Shakespeare’s tragic passion into a story of first feelings, freedom, and the desire to belong—without sentimentality, but with a generous dose of humor, energy, and tenderness. It is a unique cinematic perspective on childhood that is at once an adventure, a story of first love, and a small snapshot of the adult world.
