The film *No Good Men*, directed by Shahrbanoo Sadat, who also plays the lead role (Wolf and Sheep, SFF 2017), is set in Kabul just before the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Amid this period of great political uncertainty and danger, Naru (Sadat), the only female camerawoman at Kabul’s main television station, must face a personal crisis. After leaving her unfaithful and abusive husband, she tries at all costs to gain custody of her young son. Add to that the sexism Naru faces at work, and it’s no wonder she’s convinced that there are “no good men” left in Afghanistan. When she is assigned to cover a serious news story instead of the “women’s issues” she is usually given, she teams up with Qodrat (Anwar Hashimi), the best reporter on Kabul TV. Their initial encounters are cautious, but they gradually begin to feel drawn to one another. The backdrop to their relationship, however, is anything but romantic—the Taliban are closing in, and it seems that the window of freedom gained by journalists, women, and civil society will soon shut dramatically. The director skillfully plays with the conventions of the romantic comedy while simultaneously capturing the terror of a society on the brink of upheaval. The result is a film that is as bold as it is compelling.
