This film musical set against the backdrop of a hop-picking brigade was made 53 years ago, but entire generations of viewers have grown up on its humor and songs. Its most appealing aspects are the rebellious spirit of the main characters, its timeless irony, and its lively songs. The creative team sends an outwardly mismatched pair into the battle for the right to love—the intellectual oddball Filip and the charming, practical Hanka. The pragmatic conformist Honza becomes the rival of the lovestruck classmates, and the unwitting “judge of the guilty,” a professor nicknamed Jana Ámosa. The relaxed atmosphere of the mid-1960s allowed the creators, led by director Ladislav Rychman, to balance themes of morality and generational conflict with satirical undertones. The plot, enriched with dance numbers and songs—many of which have, so to speak, become part of the popular culture—is framed by a trio of guitarists serving as symbolic guides.
