Emmerich Kálmán: THE WARRIOR WOMAN OF CHICAGO
The creator of the greatest operetta stalwarts, The Princess Charda and Countess Maritza, reached for a musically and dramaturgically unconventional work at the peak of his success. Here, Charleston and slowfox compete with Viennese waltz and Hungarian czardas, as do characters from Old Europe with those from the New World.
Although Kálmán had not been to America before, his composition is masterful, reflecting both the joie de vivre and the contradictions of the social and political situation of the interwar period. Many of these themes are relevant and alive again today. In terms of interpretation, the ŠDKE opera builds on the rich experience of the Košice opera company with operetta and specifically with Kálmán's music.
The production represents a further collaboration of all the ŠDKE companies - opera, drama and ballet.
