FILOCAFÉ: MAN AND THE LACK OF TIME, An Evening of Philosophical Dialogues
Topics for discussion:
Why do we so often lack time, why does time pass so quickly?
What is time, really? How have different teachings and traditions perceived it?
How can we slow down the passage of time, find a better rhythm, and have more time
To many of us, it seems that time is passing too quickly, that the pace of our lives is becoming faster and more exhausting despite—or perhaps precisely because of—various technological advancements. A typical response to the question “How are you?” is “Pretty good, just in a hurry.” Why is this the case, and what can or should we do about it?
We invite you to the next FiloCafé, where we’ll have the opportunity to reflect together, share experiences, and inspire one another on the topic of time—especially why it passes so quickly, why we so often lack it, what this is connected to and how, and what we can (or should) do about it to make life better, more peaceful and bearable.
We’ll open the evening with a brief talk on the evening’s theme —we’ll explore what art actually is, as well as specific art forms, their place and significance in human life; whether it is possible to master any form of art and achieve mastery in it; and whether it makes sense to speak of the “art of living,” whether such an art can even be learned, and if so, how?
We’ll present selected historical and contemporary approaches and contexts so that we can then work in groups to explore various questions related to the evening’s theme. Event participants will have the opportunity to exchange views, inspire one another, join in conversations, or simply listen.
Finally, we’ll summarize the insights from the discussions together and conclude the event with a closing talk on the evening’s theme.
The evening will be hosted by the head of the Košice branch, Mr. Rastislav Harčarufka, a New Acropolis instructor who has completed a program of study in Eastern and Western philosophy, psychology, ethics, and symbolism. He leads courses and lectures in which he draws on his many years of teaching and professional experience in integrating knowledge from various fields (science, technology, ethics, history, philosophy, and psychology).
