A critic writing for the Viennese newspaper Morgenpost wrote after the world premiere in 1874: '... in the box of the Theater an der Wien one can get the most beautiful seasickness, so it ripples in the ground floor at the enchanting notes that the baton of Johann Strauss coaxes out of the orchestra. Everything here is swishing, humming, singing and trilling like in the middle of spring.'
