O. Žiugžda: An Unbelievable Circus
The collaboration with the renowned Belarusian theater director Oleg Zhugzhda has proven very successful for the management of the Košice Puppet Theater in the past, which is why both parties agreed to continue it in the 2018/2019 season as well. The director and playwright has prepared a nonverbal performance for the audience, based on a subtle parody of traditional circus genres. On stage, the actors set up a real circus big top and gradually present the basic circus genres in a lighthearted manner: the illusionist Cat performs tricks with trained mice, the Clown performs with trained dogs, the Fakir tames a cobra, the Ostrich juggles her own eggs, the Hippo dances on a tightrope, and many others. The framework of the play is provided by three actors in circus costumes: the Theater Director (who is also the Tamer), the Red-Haired Clown, and the Strongwoman Clown, who also establish essential contact with the audience and give the performance an interactive character. The Fourth Clown supports them in their performances. Our goal was to include in our permanent repertoire a show that the whole family can enjoy. The strength of this nonverbal production lies in its accessibility. The theater plans to present it at international theater festivals, as well as, of course, on its home stage. A particularly strong aspect of the show is the diverse array of circus animal puppets, created by the theater’s art workshop staff.
The production is suitable for audiences ages 3 and up.
