Polish female artists will present works in Košice inspired by the memory of place and cultural heritage.

The long-standing collaboration between the Košice Region Cultural Center and the Provincial House of Culture in Rzeszów continues with another joint exhibition. On Monday, November 9, 2026, Polish artists Marta Krynicka-Orzech and Barbara Hubert will present their work at the Štítová Exchange in Košice; their art explores memories, history, and the relationship between humans and nature. The opening of the exhibition *Memory. Lemkovina in a Dialogue Between Art and Generations will take place at 5:00 p.m. and will introduce visitors to the traditions and experiences of the border region of southeastern Poland through two distinctive artistic approaches.

These reciprocal exhibitions are part of a long-standing collaboration and alternately showcase the works of painters and graphic artists, with photography to follow next year. Following the September exhibition in Rzeszów featuring Slovak artists Milan Bandurčin and Peter Horvát, it is now time to showcase Polish female artists in Košice. Such an exchange allows artists to reach new audiences and bring fresh perspectives and inspiration to the cultural scenes of both regions.

The exhibition *Memory: Lemkovina in a Dialogue Between Art and Generations* brings together the work of Marta Krynicka-Orzechova and Barbara Hubert, who—despite their different artistic styles—are both dedicated to a common theme —the memory of a place and its visual representation, which they perceive not as a reconstruction but as an open process of uncovering traces of the past in the contemporary image. Marta Krynicka-Orzech, a graduate of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Rzeszów, works as a visual artist and biologist. In her work, she draws on her Lemko roots. She explores the relationship between humans and nature, symbolism, and transience. In 2025, she received a scholarship from the city of Rzeszów for the project “Against Oblivion,” which bridges art, ethnography, and botany. She is a member of the Association of Polish Fine Artists (ZPAP).
Barbara Hubert is a painter, visual artist, curator, educator, and graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In her work, she focuses, among other things, on memories of villages that disappeared after being submerged by the waters of Lake Solina. Through visual art and interdisciplinary projects, she strives to restore these places to the collective memory. She is the creator of art films and a curator of international exhibition projects.

“This exhibition, too, is proof that art naturally transcends borders and connects people, regions, and cultures. Art requires not only talent and creativity, but also space, support, and opportunities that allow it to flourish. Through the Košice Self-Governing Region’s development program, ‘Talents of the Region,’ we are creating conditions for the development of the creative potential of both emerging and experienced artists. “We are pleased to be able to showcase the work of artists from abroad in our region and, at the same time, present the works of our talented visual artists beyond Slovakia’s borders,” said Michal Kupec, director of the Košice Region Cultural Center.

The exhibition is another step in building cultural partnerships between Slovakia and Poland, as well as an opportunity to discover contemporary art that, through personal stories, explores broader themes of memory, identity, and our relationship to the place we come from.

The exhibition will be open to the public at the Štítová Exchange every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. through January 8, 2027.
