The Košice Golden Treasure is organized by Slovak Television and Radio (STVR), specifically STVR Studio Košice. The competition aims to support and develop original Slovak popular music. It seeks out new songwriters and performers who create their own songs with Slovak lyrics.

This prestigious music project has a rich history —it was founded in 1980 and is one of the oldest song contests in Slovakia. Originally, it was intended for young singers who performed cover versions, but in the late 1970s, it transformed into a competition for original works. Since then, it has provided a platform for presenting original music and discovering new talent. It helps raise the profile of both emerging and established artists and shapes generations of young people through songs.
