In Sečovce’s Habeš, it is said that if you place a loaf of bread upside down, the whole world will be turned upside down—not just the bread. In Bidovce, Jagalo Manuš—the Fire Man—or the so-called Dujeduchengero—the Two-Spirited One—used to appear.
Shortly before Halloween at the Tabačka Gallery, we’ll gather to enjoy music and hear both old and contemporary Romani ghost stories and customs, as well as listen to Romani and Jewish songs associated with the season of remembrance for the deceased. Between the realms of the living and the dead lies a space where, once you enter, nothing is as it seems. But there’s no need to be too afraid. Jewish and Romani songs are talismans whenever the world is turned upside down.
