The Wild Horse Nine is a dark, action-packed, comedic drama and spy thriller from 2026, written and directed by Oscar winner Martin McDonagh. The story takes place in 1973, shortly before the military coup in Chile. Two eccentric CIA agents—the aging and philosophical Chris (John Malkovich) and his rough-around-the-edges, talkative protégé Lee (Sam Rockwell)—are sent by their boss MJ (Steve Buscemi) to Easter Island following secret political maneuvers in Santiago. Although the trip to the isolated island was supposed to be a sort of vacation and a simple mission for these weary assassins, the situation quickly spirals out of control. Amid the mystical landscape, both partners begin to grapple with their own dark pasts, mounting paranoia, and conspiracies. When Chris also forms an unexpected bond with a pair of rebellious local college students, their trust is put to an uncompromising test, and the entire journey to this remote paradise takes an unexpected and chaotic turn. The film bears the signature style of director Martin McDonagh (creator of hits such as In Bruges and The Ghosts of Inisherin)—it blends absurd black humor with deep melancholy and focuses on a complicated, toxic male friendship. The film stars the brilliant John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell in the lead roles.
